CityStrides, Wandrer, StreetFerret and Squadrats all work on activities you sync from Strava, Garmin or similar services, and process them on their own servers, worldwide. Every Street is a phone app that records and matches your walks on the phone itself, with no account; it covers 27 cities so far. Which one fits depends on whether you want worldwide coverage and Strava sync, or privacy and a game built around your own city.

Every Street

A phone app for walking your own city. It records your walks (or starts by itself with Auto walk), matches them to the streets on the phone, and shows your progress per street and district, with achievements only that city has. There is no account and your GPS track never leaves your phone. The catch: it covers 27 cities so far, and it’s coming soon to the App Store and Google Play. CityStrides

The best-known street tracker, since 2013. A website that syncs your runs and walks from Strava, Garmin and other services and counts OpenStreetMap streets in any city: a street is complete when you’ve passed within 25 m of 90 % of its nodes (all of them for streets with fewer than 10 nodes). Free; supporters get extras such as manual GPX upload and ad-free use. Every Street vs CityStrides.

Wandrer

Counts the distance of roads you’ve never travelled, one point per mile, with separate scores for foot and bike. It syncs from Strava, Garmin, RideWithGPS and Coros and works worldwide on OpenStreetMap. Free for your last 50 activities, US$40 a year for everything. Every Street vs Wandrer.

Squadrats

Tile hunting rather than streets: you collect the map squares your activities pass through, and aim for the biggest square or cluster. It has apps for iPhone and Android that record GPS themselves, and it syncs from Strava and Garmin. Popular with cyclists. Every Street vs Squadrats.

StreetFerret

Street-by-street city maps built from your Strava activities, for runners and cyclists. Free for 10 cities, Pro US$4 a month for unlimited cities.

Not an app: Every Single Street

Every Single Street is the project of the ultrarunner Rickey Gates, who ran every street of San Francisco in late 2018 and later took it to other cities. It gave the challenge its name. Read how to do it yourself.

Questions

What is the best app to run or walk every street?

It depends on how you record. If you already log everything in Strava or on a Garmin and want any city worldwide, CityStrides (streets) or Wandrer (road distance, also by bike) fit well. If you want your location to stay on your phone, no account, and city-specific achievements, Every Street fits, in the 27 cities it covers.

Is there a CityStrides app for iPhone or Android?

No. CityStrides is a website; its operator says “There’s no app, it’s just a website”. You can add it to your home screen. It gets your activities from services like Strava or Garmin.

Which of these apps work without Strava?

Every Street works with no other service at all. CityStrides can also sync from Garmin, Coros, Polar, Suunto, Runkeeper or MapMyFitness, Wandrer from Garmin, RideWithGPS or Coros, and Squadrats has its own recording app. StreetFerret works only with Strava.
