Datenschutzerklärung

für die App Every Street (iPhone und Android) und diese Website · Stand: 30. September 2026

Kurz gesagt: Every Street funktioniert ohne Konto. Wo du läufst, wird nur auf deinem Gerät verarbeitet und nie an uns übertragen. Nur wenn du „Meine Summen teilen“ einschaltest, werden dein Anzeigename, optional dein Heimatviertel und deine Blockzahlen online gespeichert, damit Ranglisten und Crews funktionieren. Schaltest du es aus, wird alles gelöscht. Die App und diese Website enthalten keine Werbung und kein Tracking. Nur wenn du zustimmst („Hilf mit, Every Street zu verbessern“), sendet die App anonyme Nutzungsstatistiken, ohne deinen Standort (Abschnitt 7).

2. Was nur auf deinem Gerät verarbeitet wird

Die folgenden Daten verarbeitet die App ausschließlich auf deinem Gerät. Sie werden nie an uns oder an Dritte übertragen, und wir haben keinen Zugriff darauf:

  • Standort (GPS): während eines Walks und, wenn du Auto-Walk einschaltest, auch im Hintergrund, um die gelaufenen Straßenabschnitte zu erkennen. Deine Walks, GPS-Punkte, gelaufenen Straßen und dein Fortschritt werden in einer Datenbank auf dem Gerät gespeichert.
  • Bewegungsaktivität: iOS (Core Motion) bzw. Android (Activity Recognition) melden, ob du gehst oder in einem Fahrzeug sitzt, damit Bus- und Bahnfahrten nicht als Walk zählen und Auto-Walk weiß, wann ein Walk beginnt.
  • Importe: Dateien, die du auswählst (GPX, TCX, FIT, der Datenexport von Strava, dein Export aus Google Timeline), werden auf dem Gerät gelesen. Die App verbindet sich dafür nicht mit Strava oder Google.
  • Gesundheitsdaten: Wenn du Apple Health (iPhone) bzw. Health Connect (Android) verbindest, liest die App Trainings der Art Gehen, Wandern und Laufen samt ihrer Route und schreibt deine aufgezeichneten Walks als Geh-Training mit Distanz und Route dorthin. Diese Daten bleiben auf deinem Gerät bzw. in Apple Health oder Health Connect.
  • Profilfoto und Anzeigename werden auf dem Gerät gespeichert. Das Foto wird nie hochgeladen; den Anzeigenamen nur, wenn du deine Summen teilst (Abschnitt 5).
  • Diagnosedaten (iPhone): Leistungs- und Absturzberichte von Apple MetricKit speichert die App nur lokal. Absturzberichte an uns gehen nur mit deiner Zustimmung (Abschnitt 7). Ob Apple selbst Analysedaten erhält, bestimmst du in den iOS-Einstellungen unter „Datenschutz & Sicherheit › Analyse & Verbesserungen“.

Auf Android sind Cloud-Backups der App-Daten ausgeschaltet. Auf dem iPhone können App-Daten Teil deines iCloud- oder Computer-Backups sein, wenn du diese bei Apple nutzt.

3. Karten

Die App zeigt deine Straßen auf einer Grundkarte. Die Kartenkacheln werden dabei direkt vom Kartenanbieter geladen, der deine IP-Adresse, Geräteinformationen und die angezeigten Kartenausschnitte erhält. Every Street übergibt deine Position nicht an den Kartenanbieter; aus den geladenen Ausschnitten lässt sich aber ablesen, welche Gegend du dir ansiehst.

  • iPhone: Apple Maps (MapKit) der Apple Inc. Einzelheiten: Datenschutzrichtlinie von Apple und „Apple Karten & Datenschutz“.
  • Android: Google Maps SDK der Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Irland. Google kann dabei auch Daten in den USA verarbeiten. Einzelheiten: Datenschutzerklärung von Google. Die Standortbestimmung auf Android nutzt den Fused Location Provider der Google-Play-Dienste; ob dafür auch WLAN- und Mobilfunkdaten an Google gehen, bestimmst du in den Android-Einstellungen („Google-Standortgenauigkeit“).

Rechtsgrundlage ist unser berechtigtes Interesse, dir eine Karte anzuzeigen (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. f DSGVO).

Walks planen: Routen berechnet die App auf deinem Gerät. Suchst du dabei nach einem Start oder Ziel, findet die App Straßen und Orte der Stadt offline im Stadtpaket. Für Adressen sendet sie den eingegebenen Suchtext und den Kartenausschnitt der Stadt auf dem iPhone an Apple (MapKit-Suche), auf Android an den Geocoder des Geräts (auf den meisten Geräten Google); deinen Standort sendet sie dabei nicht. Rechtsgrundlage ist auch hier unser berechtigtes Interesse, die Suche anzubieten, die du nutzt (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. f DSGVO).

4. Diese Website und der Download der Stadtpakete

Diese Website (get-everystreet.com) und die Stadtpakete, die die App herunterlädt (/packs/), werden über Cloudflare Pages der Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA, bereitgestellt, die für uns als Auftragsverarbeiter tätig ist (Art. 28 DSGVO). Beim Aufruf einer Seite oder beim Laden des Katalogs und eines Stadtpakets verarbeitet Cloudflare technisch notwendige Daten: deine IP-Adresse, Datum und Uhrzeit, die aufgerufene Adresse, den User-Agent und ggf. die verweisende Seite. Das ist nötig, um die Inhalte auszuliefern und vor Angriffen zu schützen (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. f DSGVO). Wir selbst werten diese Daten nicht aus. Die App fragt den Katalog von Zeit zu Zeit neu ab und sendet dabei keine Daten über dich mit.

Cloudflare verarbeitet Daten auch in den USA. Die Übermittlung stützt sich auf das EU-US Data Privacy Framework, unter dem Cloudflare, Inc. zertifiziert ist, und auf die Standardvertragsklauseln der EU-Kommission. Einzelheiten: Datenschutzerklärung von Cloudflare.

Die Website setzt keine Cookies, speichert nichts in deinem Browser, nutzt keine Analyse- oder Tracking-Werkzeuge und lädt keine Inhalte von Dritten (auch die Schriften liegen auf diesem Server).

5. Ranglisten und Crews: nur wenn du „Meine Summen teilen“ einschaltest

Ranglisten und Crews sind freiwillig. Erst wenn du „Meine Summen teilen“ einschaltest (unter „Du › Einstellungen › Ranglisten & Crews“, oder indem du der Rangliste beitrittst, eine Crew gründest oder einer beitrittst), speichert die App folgende Daten in der Datenbank:

  • deinen Anzeigenamen (höchstens 24 Zeichen, frei wählbar),
  • optional dein Heimatviertel (als Kennziffer eines Stadtteils),
  • die Zahl deiner gelaufenen Blocks je Tag, Kalenderwoche, Monat, Jahr und insgesamt, jeweils pro Stadt (mit der Kennung des jeweiligen Zeitraums),
  • die Plattform (iOS oder Android), eine Schema-Version und den Zeitpunkt der letzten Aktualisierung,
  • die Crews, die du gründest oder denen du beitrittst: Name der Crew, Stadt, Beitrittscode, Gründer, Mitgliederzahl, Mitglieder und Beitrittszeitpunkt,
  • eine zufällige, anonyme Nutzerkennung von Firebase Authentication.

Nicht übertragen werden: dein Standort, deine Walks und Routen, Zeitpunkte deiner Walks, Gesundheitsdaten, dein Profilfoto.

Wer das sieht: Anzeigename, Heimatviertel, Blockzahlen, Plattform und Zeitpunkt der Aktualisierung können alle angemeldeten Nutzer der App in den Ranglisten sehen; die Mitglieder einer Crew sehen sich gegenseitig in der Crew.

Einladungscodes: Öffnest du einen Crew-Einladungslink, ohne deine Summen zu teilen, meldet die App dich anonym bei Firebase an, um den Code nachzuschlagen. Dabei wird kein Profil gespeichert.

Rechtsgrundlage ist deine Einwilligung (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a DSGVO), die du mit dem Einschalten von „Meine Summen teilen“ erteilst. Du kannst sie jederzeit mit Wirkung für die Zukunft widerrufen, indem du den Schalter ausschaltest (Art. 7 Abs. 3 DSGVO).

6. Auftragsverarbeiter für Ranglisten und Crews: Google Firebase

Für Ranglisten und Crews nutzen wir Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore und Firebase App Check der Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Irland, als Auftragsverarbeiter (Art. 28 DSGVO).

  • Cloud Firestore speichert die Daten aus Abschnitt 5 in der EU-Region eur3 (Belgien und Niederlande).
  • Firebase Authentication vergibt die anonyme Nutzerkennung. Dabei verarbeitet Firebase auch deine IP-Adresse und den User-Agent, etwa zur Missbrauchsabwehr.
  • Firebase App Check prüft, dass Anfragen aus der echten App stammen: auf dem iPhone mit Apple App Attest, auf Android mit der Play Integrity API von Google. Dabei werden Informationen über die App und die Integrität deines Geräts an Apple bzw. Google übermittelt; Rechtsgrundlage ist unser berechtigtes Interesse, die Datenbank vor Missbrauch zu schützen (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. f DSGVO).

Es lässt sich nicht ausschließen, dass Google Daten auch in den USA verarbeitet. Eine solche Übermittlung stützt sich auf das EU-US Data Privacy Framework, unter dem Google LLC zertifiziert ist, und auf die Standardvertragsklauseln der EU-Kommission. Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics, Cloud Messaging und Werbedienste nutzen wir nicht; die automatische Datenerhebung des Firebase-SDK ist ausgeschaltet.

7. Nutzungsstatistik, Absturzberichte und Feedback: PostHog (nur mit deiner Zustimmung)

Um zu verstehen, wie die App genutzt wird und wo sie hakt, nutzen wir PostHog der PostHog Inc., 2261 Market St., #4008, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA, als Auftragsverarbeiter (Art. 28 DSGVO). Die Daten liegen in der EU-Cloud von PostHog in Frankfurt am Main.

Nur nach deiner Zustimmung: Die App fragt beim Einrichten „Hilf mit, Every Street zu verbessern“ („Teilen“ / „Nicht jetzt“); du kannst es jederzeit unter „Du › Einstellungen › Datenschutz“ ein- und ausschalten. Vor deiner Zustimmung sendet die App nichts. Einige Ereignisse der Einrichtung (App geöffnet, Seite der Einrichtung angesehen, Einrichtung abgeschlossen oder abgebrochen) hält sie so lange nur im Arbeitsspeicher; sagst du ja, werden sie mit ihrem ursprünglichen Zeitpunkt gesendet, sagst du nein, werden sie verworfen.

Mit deiner Zustimmung werden verarbeitet:

  • eine zufällige Gerätekennung, die die App erzeugt und auf dem Gerät speichert (iPhone: Schlüsselbund, nur dieses Gerät; Android: vom Backup ausgenommener App-Speicher). Sie wird nie mit deinem Firebase-Konto oder deinem Anzeigenamen verknüpft. Eine Werbe-ID nutzt die App nicht.
  • Nutzungsereignisse: welche Funktionen du nutzt (etwa Walk gestartet oder beendet, Tab gewechselt, Route geplant, Import abgeschlossen, Erfolg freigeschaltet), mit groben Werten wie Dauer, Strecke und Anzahl in Stufen (z. B. „15–30 Minuten“, „1–3 km“), die gewählte Stadt, App-Version, Plattform, Gerätemodell, Betriebssystem und Sprache.
  • Sitzungsaufzeichnungen (Session Replay): Bildschirmfotos der App-Oberfläche, in denen alle Texte, Eingaben und Bilder geschwärzt sind, auch die Namen anderer Spieler. Solange eine Karte, ein Walk oder seine Wiedergabe oder die Ortssuche zu sehen ist und solange ein Walk aufgezeichnet wird, pausiert die Aufzeichnung ganz.
  • Absturzberichte und Fehler: technische Angaben zu Abstürzen und Fehlern der App.

Nie gesendet werden: dein Standort und deine Walks, Koordinaten, Straßen, Stadtteile, dein Suchtext, dein Anzeigename, Crew-Namen und dein Profilfoto. Genauer als die gewählte Stadt wird keine Ortsangabe übertragen. PostHog ermittelt keinen Ort aus deiner IP-Adresse, und unser Projekt bei PostHog speichert keine IP-Adressen. Wir führen die Daten nicht mit anderen Daten zusammen und nutzen sie nicht für Werbung.

Rechtsgrundlage ist deine Einwilligung (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a DSGVO; für das Speichern und Auslesen der Gerätekennung § 25 Abs. 1 TDDDG). Du kannst sie jederzeit mit Wirkung für die Zukunft widerrufen, indem du den Schalter ausschaltest (Art. 7 Abs. 3 DSGVO); danach sendet die App nichts mehr.

Feedback: Schickst du uns über „Feedback senden“ (in den Einstellungen oder nach einem fehlgeschlagenen Import oder einer fehlgeschlagenen Route) eine Nachricht, gehen deine Nachricht und die gewählte Kategorie mit App-Version und Plattform an eine Umfrage in PostHog. Das geht auch ohne Zustimmung zur Nutzungsstatistik; dann wird die Nachricht einmalig unter einer zufälligen Kennung ohne Nutzerprofil gesendet. Rechtsgrundlage ist unser berechtigtes Interesse, deine Nachricht zu lesen und die App zu verbessern (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. f DSGVO). Schreib bitte keine persönlichen Daten hinein; wir können auf Feedback nicht antworten. Möchtest du eine Antwort, schreib uns eine E-Mail.

Stadtvorschläge: Schlägst du uns über „Stadt vorschlagen“ (unter der Städteliste) eine Stadt vor, gilt dasselbe wie für Feedback: Es geht nur, was du eintippst (die Stadt und, wenn du willst, das Land), mit App-Version und Plattform an eine Umfrage in PostHog.

PostHog Inc. sitzt in den USA. Soweit PostHog dennoch Daten aus den USA heraus verarbeitet (etwa im Support), stützt sich die Übermittlung auf die Standardvertragsklauseln der EU-Kommission im Auftragsverarbeitungsvertrag. Einzelheiten: Datenschutzerklärung von PostHog.

8. Konto auf einem neuen Handy behalten (optional)

Damit deine Summen einen Gerätewechsel überstehen, kannst du dein anonymes Konto freiwillig verknüpfen. Rechtsgrundlage ist auch hier deine Einwilligung (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a DSGVO).

  • iPhone, „Mit Apple anmelden“: Wir fragen weder Namen noch E-Mail-Adresse ab und erhalten nur eine anonyme, app-spezifische Kennung von Apple. Beim Ausschalten des Teilens widerruft die App diese Verknüpfung bei Apple.
  • Android, „Mit Google anmelden“ (über den Credential Manager von Android): Google übermittelt an Firebase Authentication die Kennung deines Google-Kontos sowie die mit ihm verbundene E-Mail-Adresse, deinen Namen und die Adresse deines Profilbilds. Firebase Authentication speichert diese Angaben beim Konto; in der Datenbank und für andere Nutzer sind sie nicht sichtbar. Beim Ausschalten des Teilens wird das Konto samt diesen Angaben gelöscht. Die Verbindung in deinem Google-Konto kannst du unter „Drittanbieter-Apps und -Dienste“ entfernen.

9. Keine Werbung, kein Tracking

Die App und diese Website enthalten keine Werbung und keine Werbe- oder Tracking-Werkzeuge. Die App verfolgt dich nicht über andere Apps oder Websites hinweg und nutzt keine Werbe-ID. Nutzungsstatistiken erhebt sie nur mit deiner Zustimmung, anonym und ohne Standort (Abschnitt 7); diese Website erhebt keine. Wir geben keine Daten an Werbenetzwerke oder Datenhändler weiter und verkaufen keine Daten.

10. Speicherdauer und Löschung

  • Die Daten aus Abschnitt 5, 6 und 8 bleiben gespeichert, bis du „Meine Summen teilen“ ausschaltest. Dann löscht die App in allen Städten deine Profile, deine Crew-Mitgliedschaften, die von dir gegründeten Crews samt ihren Mitgliedschaften und Beitrittscodes sowie dein Firebase-Konto. Restkopien in internen Sicherungen von Google werden nach deren Fristen überschrieben.
  • Daten auf deinem Gerät löschst du, indem du die App entfernst. Walks, die die App in Apple Health oder Health Connect gesichert hat, löschst du dort.
  • Ohne die App kannst du die Löschung auch per E-Mail an [email protected] verlangen; Anleitung: Konto und Daten löschen.
  • Zugriffsdaten bei Cloudflare (Abschnitt 4) werden nach den Fristen von Cloudflare gelöscht; wir speichern sie nicht.
  • Nutzungsereignisse und Absturzberichte (Abschnitt 7) speichert PostHog höchstens 12 Monate, Sitzungsaufzeichnungen 30 Tage; danach werden sie gelöscht. Feedback bewahren wir auf, solange wir es für die Verbesserung der App brauchen, höchstens ebenfalls 12 Monate. Schaltest du die Nutzungsstatistik aus, sendet die App nichts mehr; bereits gesendete Daten sind keinem Konto zugeordnet und laufen mit diesen Fristen aus. Auf Anfrage per E-Mail löschen wir sie früher, soweit wir sie deinem Gerät zuordnen können.
  • Die Gerätekennung liegt auf deinem Gerät. Auf Android wird sie mit der App entfernt; auf dem iPhone kann sie im Schlüsselbund eine Neuinstallation überdauern, wird aber ohne deine Zustimmung nicht gesendet.

11. Deine Rechte

Du hast das Recht auf Auskunft (Art. 15 DSGVO), Berichtigung (Art. 16), Löschung (Art. 17), Einschränkung der Verarbeitung (Art. 18) und Datenübertragbarkeit (Art. 20). Eine Einwilligung kannst du jederzeit mit Wirkung für die Zukunft widerrufen (Art. 7 Abs. 3). Soweit wir Daten auf Grundlage berechtigter Interessen verarbeiten, kannst du aus Gründen, die sich aus deiner besonderen Situation ergeben, widersprechen (Art. 21). Schreib dazu an [email protected]. Da die Konten anonym sind, brauchen wir ggf. deinen Anzeigenamen und die Stadt, um dein Profil zu finden. Nutzungsstatistiken (Abschnitt 7) sind keiner Person zugeordnet; wir können sie dir nur zuordnen, wenn du uns hilfst, sie zu finden (Art. 11 DSGVO). Deine Einwilligung zur Nutzungsstatistik widerrufst du am einfachsten in der App unter „Du › Einstellungen › Datenschutz“.

Du kannst dich außerdem bei einer Datenschutz-Aufsichtsbehörde beschweren (Art. 77 DSGVO). Für uns zuständig ist der Hamburgische Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit (HmbBfDI), Ludwig-Erhard-Straße 22, 20459 Hamburg, datenschutz-hamburg.de.

12. Pflicht zur Bereitstellung

Du bist nicht verpflichtet, Daten bereitzustellen. Ohne Standortzugriff kann die App keine Walks aufzeichnen; ohne „Meine Summen teilen“ gibt es keine Ranglisten und Crews. Alles andere funktioniert trotzdem, auch ohne Nutzungsstatistik. Eine automatisierte Entscheidungsfindung einschließlich Profiling (Art. 22 DSGVO) findet nicht statt.

13. Änderungen

Wir passen diese Erklärung an, wenn sich die App oder die Rechtslage ändert. Es gilt die jeweils hier veröffentlichte Fassung.

Privacy policy

In short: Every Street works without an account. Where you walk is processed only on your device and never sent to us. Only if you turn on “Share my totals” are your display name, optionally your home district, and your block counts stored online, so leaderboards and crews work. Turn it off and everything is deleted. The app and this website contain no ads and no tracking. Only if you agree to “Help improve Every Street” does the app send anonymous usage statistics, without your location (section 7).

2. What is processed only on your device

The app processes the following data only on your device. It is never sent to us or to anyone else, and we have no access to it:

  • Location (GPS): during a walk and, if you turn on Auto walk, also in the background, to detect the street segments you walk. Your walks, GPS points, walked streets and progress are stored in a database on the device.
  • Motion activity: iOS (Core Motion) or Android (Activity Recognition) report whether you are walking or in a vehicle, so bus and train rides don’t count as walks and Auto walk knows when a walk starts.
  • Imports: files you pick (GPX, TCX, FIT, Strava’s data export, your Google Timeline export) are read on the device. The app does not connect to Strava or Google for this.
  • Health data: if you connect Apple Health (iPhone) or Health Connect (Android), the app reads walking, hiking and running workouts with their routes, and writes the walks you record there as walking workouts with distance and route. This data stays on your device or in Apple Health or Health Connect.
  • Profile photo and display name are stored on the device. The photo is never uploaded; the display name only if you share your totals (section 5).
  • Diagnostics (iPhone): performance and crash reports from Apple MetricKit are kept by the app locally only. Crash reports reach us only with your consent (section 7). Whether Apple itself receives analytics is up to you in iOS Settings under “Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements”.

On Android, cloud backups of the app’s data are turned off. On iPhone, app data may be part of your iCloud or computer backup if you use one with Apple.

3. Maps

The app shows your streets on a base map. The map tiles are loaded directly from the map provider, which receives your IP address, device information and the map areas shown. Every Street does not pass your position to the map provider, but the areas loaded reveal which part of the map you are looking at.

  • iPhone: Apple Maps (MapKit) by Apple Inc. Details: Apple’s privacy policy and “Apple Maps & Privacy”.
  • Android: Google Maps SDK by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. Google may also process data in the US. Details: Google’s privacy policy. Location on Android uses the Fused Location Provider of Google Play services; whether Wi-Fi and mobile network data go to Google for this is up to you in Android settings (“Google Location Accuracy”).

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in showing you a map (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Planning a walk: the app computes routes on your device. When you search for a start or a destination, it finds the city’s streets and places offline in the city pack. For addresses, it sends the text you type and the city’s map area to Apple on iPhone (MapKit search) and to the device’s geocoder on Android (Google on most devices); it does not send your location. The legal basis is again our legitimate interest in offering the search you use (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

4. This website and city pack downloads

This website (get-everystreet.com) and the city packs the app downloads (/packs/) are served by Cloudflare Pages of Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA, acting as our processor (Art. 28 GDPR). When you open a page, or the app loads the catalog or a city pack, Cloudflare processes technically necessary data: your IP address, date and time, the requested address, the user agent and, where applicable, the referring page. This is needed to deliver the content and to protect it against attacks (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). We don’t analyse this data ourselves. The app refreshes the catalog from time to time and sends no data about you with it.

Cloudflare also processes data in the US. Such transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, under which Cloudflare, Inc. is certified, and on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses. Details: Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

The website sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser, uses no analytics or tracking tools and loads no third-party content (the fonts are served from this site, too).

5. Leaderboards and crews: only if you turn on “Share my totals”

Leaderboards and crews are optional. Only when you turn on “Share my totals” (under “You › Settings › Leaderboards & Crews”, or by joining the leaderboard, or creating or joining a crew) does the app store the following in the database:

  • your display name (up to 24 characters, chosen by you),
  • optionally your home district (as the id of a district),
  • the number of blocks you walked per day, ISO week, month, year and all time, per city (with the key of each period),
  • the platform (iOS or Android), a schema version and the time of the last update,
  • the crews you create or join: crew name, city, join code, creator, member count, members and time of joining,
  • a random, anonymous user id from Firebase Authentication.

Never sent: your location, your walks and routes, the times of your walks, health data, your profile photo.

Who sees it: your display name, home district, block counts, platform and update time can be seen by all signed-in users of the app on the leaderboards; crew members see each other in the crew.

Invite codes: if you open a crew invite link without sharing your totals, the app signs you in to Firebase anonymously to look up the code. No profile is stored.

Legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you give by turning on “Share my totals”. You can withdraw it at any time, with effect for the future, by turning the switch off (Art. 7(3) GDPR).

6. Processor for leaderboards and crews: Google Firebase

For leaderboards and crews we use Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore and Firebase App Check by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, as a processor (Art. 28 GDPR).

  • Cloud Firestore stores the data in section 5 in the EU region eur3 (Belgium and the Netherlands).
  • Firebase Authentication issues the anonymous user id. It also processes your IP address and user agent, for example to prevent abuse.
  • Firebase App Check verifies that requests come from the genuine app: on iPhone with Apple App Attest, on Android with Google’s Play Integrity API. Information about the app and your device’s integrity is sent to Apple or Google for this; the legal basis is our legitimate interest in protecting the database against abuse (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Google may also process data in the US. Such transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, under which Google LLC is certified, and on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses. We don’t use Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics, Cloud Messaging or any advertising service; the Firebase SDK’s automatic data collection is turned off.

7. Usage statistics, crash reports and feedback: PostHog (only with your consent)

To understand how the app is used and where it falls short, we use PostHog by PostHog Inc., 2261 Market St., #4008, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA, as a processor (Art. 28 GDPR). The data is stored in PostHog’s EU cloud in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Only after you agree: during setup the app asks “Help improve Every Street” (“Share” / “Not now”); you can turn it on and off at any time under “You › Settings › Privacy”. Before you agree, the app sends nothing. Meanwhile it keeps a few setup events (app opened, setup page viewed, setup finished or left) in memory only; if you say yes they are sent with their original time, if you say no they are dropped.

With your consent, the following is processed:

  • a random device id that the app creates and stores on the device (iPhone: the keychain, this device only; Android: app storage excluded from backups). It is never linked to your Firebase account or your display name. The app does not use an advertising id.
  • Usage events: which features you use (for example a walk started or ended, a tab switched, a route planned, an import finished, an achievement unlocked), with coarse values such as duration, distance and counts in ranges (for example “15–30 minutes”, “1–3 km”), the selected city, app version, platform, device model, operating system and language.
  • Session recordings (session replay): screenshots of the app’s interface in which all text, input and images are masked, including other players’ names. While a map, a walk or its replay, or the place search is on screen, and while a walk is being recorded, recording pauses entirely.
  • Crash reports and errors: technical details of the app’s crashes and errors.

Never sent: your location and your walks, coordinates, streets, districts, your search text, your display name, crew names and your profile photo. No location detail finer than the selected city is sent. PostHog does not derive a location from your IP address, and our PostHog project does not store IP addresses. We don’t combine this data with other data and don’t use it for advertising.

Legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR; for storing and reading the device id, § 25(1) of the German TDDDG). You can withdraw it at any time, with effect for the future, by turning the switch off (Art. 7(3) GDPR); the app then sends nothing more.

Feedback: if you send us a message with “Send feedback” (in Settings, or after a failed import or route), your message and the category you picked go to a survey in PostHog, with the app version and platform. This works without consent to usage statistics too; the message is then sent once under a random id, without a user profile. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in reading your message and improving the app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Please don’t put personal data in it; we can’t reply to feedback. City suggestions: if you suggest a city with “Suggest a city” (below the list of cities), the same applies as for feedback: only what you type (the city and, if you like, the country) goes to a survey in PostHog, with the app version and platform.

PostHog Inc. is based in the US. Where PostHog processes data from the US nonetheless (for example in support), such transfers rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses in the data processing agreement. Details: PostHog’s privacy policy.

8. Keeping your account on a new phone (optional)

So your totals survive a new phone, you can choose to link your anonymous account. The legal basis is again your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR).

  • iPhone, Sign in with Apple: we request neither your name nor your email address and receive only an anonymous, app-specific identifier from Apple. When you turn sharing off, the app revokes this link with Apple.
  • Android, Sign in with Google (through Android’s Credential Manager): Google sends Firebase Authentication your Google account id and the email address, name and profile picture address of that account. Firebase Authentication stores them with the account; they are not in the database and not visible to other users. When you turn sharing off, the account and these details are deleted. You can remove the connection in your Google Account under “Third-party apps & services”.

9. No ads, no tracking

The app and this website contain no ads and no advertising or tracking tools. The app does not track you across other apps or websites and uses no advertising id. It collects usage statistics only with your consent, anonymously and without location (section 7); this website collects none. We share no data with ad networks or data brokers, and we sell no data.

10. Retention and deletion

  • The data in sections 5, 6 and 8 is kept until you turn off “Share my totals”. The app then deletes, in every city, your profiles, your crew memberships, the crews you created with their memberships and join codes, and your Firebase account. Residual copies in Google’s internal backups are overwritten within Google’s periods.
  • To delete the data on your device, remove the app. Walks the app saved to Apple Health or Health Connect are deleted there.
  • Without the app, you can also request deletion by email to [email protected]; see Delete your account and data.
  • Access data at Cloudflare (section 4) is deleted within Cloudflare’s periods; we don’t store it.
  • PostHog keeps usage events and crash reports (section 7) for at most 12 months and session recordings for 30 days; then they are deleted. We keep feedback as long as we need it to improve the app, also at most 12 months. If you turn usage statistics off, the app sends nothing more; data already sent is not linked to any account and expires within these periods. On request by email we delete it earlier, as far as we can match it to your device.
  • The device id is stored on your device. On Android it is removed with the app; on iPhone it may survive a reinstall in the keychain, but it is never sent without your consent.

11. Your rights

You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18) and data portability (Art. 20). You can withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future (Art. 7(3)). Where we process data based on legitimate interests, you may object on grounds relating to your particular situation (Art. 21). Write to [email protected]. As accounts are anonymous, we may need your display name and city to find your profile. Usage statistics (section 7) are not linked to a person; we can only match them to you if you help us find them (Art. 11 GDPR). The easiest way to withdraw your consent to usage statistics is in the app under “You › Settings › Privacy”.

You may also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). The authority responsible for us is the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (HmbBfDI), Ludwig-Erhard-Straße 22, 20459 Hamburg, Germany, datenschutz-hamburg.de.

12. Whether you have to provide data

You don’t have to provide any data. Without location access the app can’t record walks; without “Share my totals” there are no leaderboards or crews. Everything else still works, with or without usage statistics. There is no automated decision-making, including profiling (Art. 22 GDPR).

13. Changes

We update this policy when the app or the law changes. The version published here applies.
