San Francisco is small on the map and steep on foot. City of Stairways sends you up and down its hills, from the Filbert Steps on Telegraph Hill below Coit Tower to the Vulcan Stairway, and plenty of climbs end with a view you didn’t expect. The crooked block of Lombard Street is only the famous start.

Out west, The Avenues walks the numbered avenues of the Richmond and the Sunset down to the ocean. Market Street runs from the Ferry Building towards Twin Peaks, the Crosstown Trail cuts corner to corner, and Over the Water takes you onto the Golden Gate Bridge. Seventy-five neighborhoods, one hood at a time.
