Edinburgh is built on hills and in layers, and it rarely lets you walk in a straight line for long. The Royal Mile runs from the Castle down to Holyrood. Closes and Wynds sends you into the narrow passages off both sides of it, and City of Stairs climbs the Scotsman Steps and the Lang Stairs between the Old Town and everything below.

Down the hill, The New Town lays out its Georgian grid from Princes Street to Queen Street. Further out, the Water of Leith Walkway follows the river through Dean Village and Stockbridge down to the Shore. Your own bit is waiting, dreich or not.
