Amsterdam is a city you read in rings. Start inside the Singel and work outwards along Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, and The Canal Ring fills in bridge by bridge. The fun is in the gaps: the little cross streets of The Nine Streets, and the stegen, alleys so narrow you could walk straight past them, which Steeg Explorer sends you looking for.

Then leave the centre. Across the IJ, Noord feels like another town, and Weesp waits at the far end of the nine stadsdelen. Every buurt you finish lights up on your map, whatever Dutch Weather throws at you.
