In Cologne everyone belongs to a Veedel, and walking the city is a way of getting to know all of them. The old centre sits in a half-circle against the Rhine, held by the Ringe: The Cologne Ring walks them from the Ubierring to the Theodor-Heuss-Ring, and Round the Gürtel repeats the trick further out. Inside, Lanes and Gates leads you through the Gassen and Pforten around the Schildergasse.
Then cross over. Across the Rhine starts with the Hohenzollernbrücke below the Kölner Dom, and Schäl Sick takes you to Porz, Kalk and Mülheim, on the bank locals like to call the “wrong” one.
